Artist Statement

 

              The words Recantos y Recuerdos are Spanish for retelling and remembering. These words align with the central theme of my work being memory preservation of my Mexican-American family history and culture. In my body of work, I seek to preserve family history as a re-teller of memories to the viewer. I retell events through recreations of treasured family photos.  Like the numerous members of my family, I serve to retell memories of their experiences living in border towns around the Rio Grande River and I elect what will be retold and what will be left forgotten. Each image retells of past events and is transcribed through digital or ceramic mediums. Both are chosen as they have a longer lasting preservation than aging family photos.
